Grid Paintings 2008-2018
The grid has been a time-honored device used for centuries by artists to transfer or enlarge images. It has become a staple of contemporary art since Mondrian and more recently with the likes of Agnes Martin. I continue to use this simple organizational device to map out new terrain for my painting. In this work you will find, patterns from the microscopic world of atoms, as well as the cosmic patterns of the universe, and digital pixels as my inspiration. I use plaster mixed with acrylic pigments, applied by trowel on fiberglass sheets or MDO plywood.
Mandala Series 2018-present
Mandala in Sanskrit means circle. The circular design symbolizes the idea that life is never ending. In Hinduism and Buddhism,
the Mandala represents the universe, and its purpose is used to center one's body and mind. In other words, the Mandala is a visual aid. In this series, I first take photographs with my phone from various sources. I record patterns, objects, and nature seen in my daily life. On my computer, I take all these photos and combine them in a process I call "Photo Collage". Using the Mandala as a base design, I choose how to highlight aspects of various photographs to create a highly dramatic image. That image is then printed on fabric. I will add cut vinyl, iridescent paint, or reflective tape to enhance the design even more. These are not AI produced; I have controlled the process throughout.
